PROJECT TITLE: Physics and biochemical process of soil in the molecular microbial ecosystems.

Soil is a fundamental resource for ecosystem function and environmental health. It is a living filter that provides vital ecosystem services – including food production, water purification, carbon sequestration, nutrient recycling, and assimilation of waste products. Soil is a key component of natural agricultural, wild land, and urban ecosystems that sustain all global processes.

Nutrients are chemicals required for plant and animal growth and other life processes. They are constantly recycled within Earth’s biosphere.Nutrients spend different amounts of time in stores within the atmosphere, oceans, and land. Nutrients are stored for short periods of time in short-term stores, such as living organisms and the atmosphere.Nutrients can also be incorporated into longer-term stores, such as Earth’s crust. Nutrient cycles describe the flow of nutrients in and out of stores as a result of biotic and abiotic processes. Without humaninterference, nutrient cycles are almost perfectly balanced.

Plants need 14 nutrient elements (in addition to C, H, O): N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Mo, Cl (Ni). Animals and humans need 22 nutrient elements: N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo, Cl, Co, Na, Se, I, Cr, Ni, V, Sn, As, F.

The project involves research and development of the physics and biochemical process of soil in molecular microbial ecology of the following main processes:

1.- The bonds between atoms to form simple molecules.

2.- Decomposition of organic matter in soil.

3.- In the cell membrane exchange At osmotic pressure level of micro

and the macronutrients;

4.- In the electron transfer chain in mitochondria and chloroplasts.

5.- Photosynthesis

6.- Cellular respiration

7.- Cellular Reproduction (micro-organisms)

8.- Cellular feeding (micro-organisms)

All aspects inherent to the growth and plant health, root system, the surrounding soil (rhizosphere), microorganisms with the system partners and their contribution to sustainable management of soil-plant.

PROJECT TITLE: Technology package to detect, identification, analysis and monitor of remotely sensed data In-Situ associated from the natural environment with the behavior of the molecular microbial ecology.

The rapid screening and sensitive monitoring of environmental pollutants, such as pesticides, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), explosives, and toxins, is indeed essential to ensure environmental quality, and therefore, human health. Until recently, the quantification of most contaminants has been limited to the traditional chromatographic and spectroscopic technologies. These methods, although accurate with low detection limits, are labor-intensive and require expensive and sophisticated instrumentation, as well as complicated and multistep sample preparation, which prohibits frequent and real-time on site monitoring of contaminants in environment.Considerable research interests, therefore, have risen for detecting low levels of environmental in biosensor development because of their simplicity, robustness, sensitivity, specificity and cost-effectiveness.

Mineral fertilizer and organic amendments are applied to meet the plants’ nutritional demands, however the effect of such practices on the associated rizospheric microbial communities are still unknown.

On the other hand, difficulties in cultivating most of the microorganisms limit our ability to study microbial ecosystems. Molecular methods are valuable tools for investigating the diversity and structure of bacterial communities. These techniques can be used on culturable as well as nonculturable bacteria. Cultivation independent techniques based on nucleic acids extracted from the environment provide information on community structure and diversity. Analysis of DNA can determine the numbers of different genomes. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) or rDNA (genes coding for rRNA) fingerprinting, probing and sequencing can be used to detect and identify organisms. The combination of different methods that complement each other is a useful strategy for monitoring changes of microbial communities in natural ecosystems.

The project involves research and development of a technology package that integrates embedded systems, industrial design, storage system distributed data, the telemetry technology; detecting the composition and molecular interactions coupled with the identification of microorganisms and their interactions in agriculture. The creation and development of prototypes for collecting, detect, identification, measurement, analysis, monitor and assimilation data associated with the behavior of the molecular microbial ecology of any agricultural field, real-time transmission and storage and distance thereof, in a standard format  of the open source data bases with the parameters required for molecular and microbial visualization in three dimensions for exploitation. It's a technology package to recollect, detect, identification, measurement, analysis, monitor and assimilation of remotely sensed data In-Situ measurements from the natural environment of physicochemical characters and microbiological interactions in any type of soils.

The availability of protein structures enables the study of their surfaces and surface properties such as electrostatic potential (EP) and hydropathy (MLP), based on atomic contribution. Recent advances in 3D animation and rendering software have yet been exploited for the representation of proteins and other biological molecules in an intuitive, animated form.

The project involves research, identify, evaluation, selection, installation, test, documentation, and integration development of a set of opensource software tools for models, analysis, designs and 3D simulation of biochemical processes that take place in the soil, from molecular and microorganism levels. Taking advantage of a software open-source, with 3D animation and rendering, Blender; we are looking for integrating different open source software packages dedicated to biological work: simulations elaboration of atoms and molecular motions with the simultaneous visualization of chemical and physical features and process; by example, it's is research, identify, evaluation, selection, installation, test, documentation and integration of a software open source , to simulate and visualize the bonds between atoms to form molecules.

They are different open-source about molecular dynamic simulator for end users, which unfolds in three dimensions with different proteins predefined information can be displayed in the form of atoms or as a molecular surface.

Many of the most important applications of computer technology (Mathematical models) come not from brand-new products, but from combining systems that are otherwise independent. These “systems-of-systems” (SoS) take many forms .The aim of SoS design is to allow the constituent systems to work together in a more responsive, efficient and greener way. The problem is that SoS design is hampered by the complexity and independence of the constituent systems, making it difficult to predict the behaviour, including the dependability, safety and security, of the combined SoS as a whole. Developers need models and tools to help choose between alternative designs, and define precise contracts between constituent systems. Without such models and tools, designs will need expensive rework when mismatches and gaps between constituent systems are discovered too late.

The project involves research and development of Mathematical models and computational algorithms of microbial communities in natural ecosystems in the quantitative and dynamic aspects of microbial life in soil: growth and multiplication, mutation, survival an death of soil microorganisms, game population, spatial and adaptive dynamics, the evolution of cooperation, microbial interactions with the soil environment, other microbes, plants, and animal; from the constraints imposed by the chemistry of the environment, physical laws, and the biological strategies that have evolved in the interaction of micro-organisms in any agricultural field.

Most structural building sections are roll formed from stainless steel. Roll forming tailor welded stainless steel could potentially lead to significant savings in material usage and weight reductions.

On the other hand, and with the same concern, metal lamintaes are gaining acceptance in current industry for lighweighting advanced structures and for sound damping.

During the project numerical simulations of the roll forming process will be performed and finally first experimental tests will be conducted to validate the numerical models.

Collaboration between Deakin and MGEP is foreseen, both for the material and tribological chracterisation (using shear test and the new MGEP’s tribological characterisaion set-up for roll forming) and for the experimental tests (two different profile shapes can be roll formed in the two universities).

Indeed, such a fellow would be expected to perform the possible following tasks:

  • set up an artificial vision system to measure wear
  • transfer vision technologies (mainly image processing software) from the MGEP to the ENIT;
  • set up an experimental device based on those elements;
  • develop new image processing functions to study wear kinetics;
  • transfer back the improved vision-based environment to the MGEP.

La Fundación Estructurar está dispuesta a recibir un becario para el Programa de Protección-Modalidad Familiar.

El objetivo del programa de protección es garantizar la restitución de los derechos a través de la modalidad de seminternado que garantiza la protección de los niños, niñas y adolescentes en situación de vulnerabilidad. Estos niños por la mañana acuden a clases del grado correspondiente y a  la tarde están en el colegio realizando otro tipo de actividades (o viceversa). Los aspectos que deberá tratar el becado están dirigidos a dos áreas:

1.Refuerzo académico

2.Orientación en la implantación de nuevas estrategias (tanto con los niños como con las familias).

 

El objetivo del programa de Modalidad familiar es brindar atención integral a los niños, niñas menores de 5 años y a sus familias, garantizando el cumplimiento de las áreas de derecho tales como: Protección, vida y supervivencia, educación inicial y participación.

En este programa el trabajo a realizar por el becario sería la creación del proyecto pedagógico. Mirar las características de la población (estadísticas, situaciones de familia…) y a partir de eso empezar a construir el proyecto.

PROJECT TITLE: Geophysical Parameters Retrieved from Coherent Marine Radars

 

A marine radar can image ocean surface waves in space and time and therefore retrieve various wave parameters e.g. wave spectra, wave period and wave height. It is well known that the phase speed of surface waves depends, in addition to the wave period and wavelength on the near-surface current and in shallow water areas on the water depth (left hand side of figure). We utilize this relation to retrieve in addition to the wave parameters the surface current and water depth (right hand side of figure). Utilizing the coherent radar systems we can measure in addition to the backscatter intensity the speed of surface scatterers, which are strongly modulated by the surface currents, winds and waves. Using our coastal and offshore test sites we want to develop in this project further signal and image processing algorithms to extract Meteorological and Oceanographical parameters from coherent marine radar imagery.

PROJECT TITLE: Magnesium alloys

Limiting greenhouse gas emissions and the need to reduce fuel consumption have become important global issues, so that the transportation industries have continuously strived to improve fuel efficiency in recent decades. Among commercially available structural materials, Mg alloys show great potential for implementation in relevant applications as a result of their characteristics such as low density, high specific strength, excellent machinability and recyclability. A further increase in their use is expected, particularly in automotive applications. Nevertheless, wider use of this lightest structural metallic material has been hindered by cost considerations and the limited formability of classical Mg-based alloys.

The new challenge and, at the same time, the ultimate goal of the planned project is to produce highly formable Mg alloy sheets using an innovative process. On the basis of systematic investigations of the influences of processing parameters on the resulting properties, a processing window resulting in high-quality sheet of the Mg-based alloys will be established.

PROJECT TITLE: Melting experiments with Magnesium alloys

For every application of Magnesium it is necessary to melt the magnesium raw material. Mg particularly molten Mg has specific properties which have to be controlled in terms of impurities. Here it is about those impurities which get into the melt above the interface between melt and gas phase. The impurities are formed by evaporated Magnesium and the cover gas. This means, all chemical reactions in the gas phase have directly influence on the quality of the melt.

The topic of the present work is to enhance the quality of the melt. For this we have to understand the processes in the melt and in the gas phase as well as the interaction at their interface.

PROJECT TITLE: Effect of cross-rolling and subsequent severe plastic deformation on the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of Mg-RE alloys

Magnesium (Mg) alloys are among the most attractive materials for application in transportation industry and mobile electronics. This is because of their low density and high specific strength. However, semi-finished products made out of wrought magnesium alloys generally exhibit poor ductility and formability at room temperature. Their limited ductility is mainly due to a strong texture that develops during thermomechanical processes like rolling and extrusion. In the case of AZ31 rolled sheets, there is a strong alignment of basal planes into the sheet plane. This strongly limits the ability to activate basal <a> slip which is the easiest deformation mode. It has been observed that the addition of rare earth elements (RE) to Mg can influence the formation of a distinctive texture, in which there is a preferential alignment of the basal planes tilted towards the transverse direction. As a characteristic, the texture intensity is weaker in Mg-RE alloys compared to the one that develops the AZ31 alloy. Furthermore, sheets of Mg-RE alloys show increase formability, however, there is a decrease in strength and they exhibit a strong anisotropic behavior. Consequently, the project deals with the systematic rolling of Mg-RE alloys (e.g. cross rolling) in order to reduce the anisotropic behavior of such alloys. Moreover, the utilization of a severe plastic deformation technique such as equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is proposed to further tailor the microstructure (i.e. grain size and texture). Since it is known that ECAP can effectively reduce the grain size, a strengthening effect due to the reduction of the grain size in Mg-RE alloys is expected by using this technique.

PROJECT TITLE: Thermoforming of Advance Thermoplastic Composite Materials

Composite materials play a key role in lightweight design due to their high stiffness/weigth ratio. Thermoforming of advanced thermoplastic composites is a fast and low-cost production technique for the manufacturing of high quality composite components. Nevertheless, the properties of the final component are highly influenced by the local fibre orientation, which is severely altered during the forming operation. Correct prediction of fibre orientation distribution seems crucial to accurately describe the mechanical behaviour of the final component.Mechanical properties of selected themoplastic composites will be characterized over a forming-relevant range of temperatures and strain rates. These results will be used to calibrate material models previously developed at the IPPE. The developed models should be implemented in a commercial finite element software in order to perform forming simulations. Simulation results will be validated performing laboratory and full-scale formingexperiments. The offered internship takes places in the frame of an on-going project between two Institutes at the JKU (IPPE and IPIM) and a company partner (ENGEL). In this way, all necesary elements to guarantee the project's succesful execution are provided.

polymers is being reseachred for light weight purposes (e.g. car industry). With our industrial project partner ENGEL AUSTRIA we investigate the processes during production. On the side of the university mostly simulations are carried out. In this internship we will focus on novel approaches to multi-agent and distributed resource allocation problems. In particular, we will investigate the applicability of automated negotiation concepts, from both theoretical and implementation viewpoints, to scheduling problems arising in several application contexts, possibly including health care, manufacturing and transportation.

The research project aims to develop optimization models and methods for resource management problems, in systems in which scarce resources must be allocated and scheduled. In particular, two research lines can be considered: the first research line consists in studying optimization approaches for assigning radio resources in wireless telecommunication systems; the second research line deals with the problem of assigning tasks to processors and to cache memory areas in order to minimize the total processing times and the power consumption.

The theoretical tools that will mainly used in the  project include combinatorial optimization, mathematical programming, network optimization, scheduling and graph theory

En función de los resultados obtenidos, el proyecto piloto se extenderá a una segunda fase, con la creación de una pequeña incubadora de empresas que facilitará la gestión de fondo: capital semilla, mediante un seguimiento personalizado que atenderán a los emprendedores de la Universidad.

PROJECT TITLE: Machine Intelligence in Computer Security and Forensics

One of the core activities of the research group is related to computer security and forensics (http://pralab.diee.unica.it). In this field the group has a 10+ yrs experience, and it is currently running two EU funded projects as well as a number of projects funded by the local regional government. The activity of the trainee will be included within the activities of these projects.

Computer security is evolving as the computing platforms and their use evolve. The widespread use of smartphones and social networks platforms changed the scenario. In addition, the protection of operating systems and applications against well-known threats, forced attackers to devise novel sophisticated attack mechanisms. The analysis of a computer system after an attack requires the use of forensics tools in order to understand the way in which the attack has been carried out as well as the consequences of the attack.

Attack prevention and detection, as well as forensic analysis can benefit from the use of machine learning tools to analyse the traces left by attackers.

 

Current activities are related to malware analysis for mobile devices (in particular, for the Android operating system), Phishing detection, malicious domains detection and analysis

PROJECT TITLE: Image Concept Detection and Retrieval

One of the activities of the research group is related to image classification and retrieval tasks (http://pralab.diee.unica.it). In this field the group has a 10+ yrs experience, and it is currently carrying out some research projects. The activity of the trainee will be included within the activities of these projects.

The automatic classification of image content is an old problem that still needs new solutions that can cope with sharp increase in the number and variety of pictures produced and shared daily. Pictures are produced by different techniques, in different scenarios, and they show very different concepts. Thus it is often critical to provide timely automatic classification and tagging of images so that the main concepts are identified for future retrieval of images by concept.

 

This project will focus on classification and retrieval techniques based on different representation techniques, including the “codebook” representation of images, the codebook being originated by low-level image descriptors. A number of techniques have been proposed in the literature, but there is still room for improvement of the overall performances. Some new technique will be devised and tested on real image archives containing millions of images.

Multilabel classification problems arise in applications like text/document categorization, information retrieval and image/video annotation, where objects (documents, images, etc.) have to be automatically categorized into a number of non-mutually exclusive classes. This kind of problem is receiving increasing attention in the research community, due to the relevance of its application fields. The PRA Lab recently developed solutions for multilabel classifier design aimed at improving classification reliability, and on maximizing specific multilabel performance measures

PROJECT TITLE: Information fusion techniques for person re-identification and people search

Person re-identification is the task of recognizing an individual across different video feeds taken in different times by one or more sensors of a camera network. This task has recently attracted a considerable interest in the computer vision field, due to its potential exploitation in videosurveillance and security applications. The PRA Lab contributed to this research topic with the development of a dissimilarity-based framework for clothing appearance descriptors with low processing time. It also contributed in developing people search techniques, aimed at searching in video footage individuals matching a given textual description of clothing appearance.

This project arises from the need for our students or practitioners of psychology, acquire skills in the care of patients assigned to children, adolescents and adults.

The psychological care provided in Clinical Psychology School UTEC is done with students therapists Bachelor in Psychology, under the supervision of teachers and professors with expertise in the clinical area . The care provided at the clinic is important, first because it starts with real patients since students start their courses in the clinical area , to begin her 4th year  . Race to year end and in its 5th year  year of their carreer, and partly because it is the gateway to the national health system, many of the patients come from service institutions and schools in the public sector, and several of them are referred to national institutions, including the National Network Hospital System , including Benjamin Bloom Children's Hospital , Rosales National Hospital, Psychiatric Hospital and National Hospital Saldaña. The Psychology Clinic UTEC has 4 patient care cubicles for children and adults. It also has a psychologist plant that manage the operation of the clinic and the assignment of patients to therapists .

 

Based on the previous one ( a) psychologist ( a) with specialization in clinical psychology is required to train , advise and audit the care model used by therapists in training in Clinical Psychology at the UTEC.

PROJECT TITLE: A comparison study of simulation models and analytical models in production systems engineering

Simulation is described as the most popular quantitative analysis method available for industrial use because of the possibility to model low-level details of almost any system under study. In production engineering, discrete-event simulation is commonly used by production engineers in both system design and operational stages. On the other hand, recent research within production systems engineering (PSE) has proposed some more advanced system-theoretic based analytical models capable for modelling complex production systems. When compared with simulation models, analytical models can be executed much faster and can provide exact output data for performance analysis. A comparison study of simulation models and analytical models in production systems engineering is therefore interesting from both academic and industrial perspectives.
